See what she had to say about her alma mater: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options.How urban or safe is the campus?Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Jasmine: Northwestern University is located in Evanston, Illinoisthe suburb just north of Chicago. It is a 12-mile campus that can be both biked and walked. It also sits right next to Lake Michigan with its own beach. The campus has a main street, called Sheridan Road, which has free shuttles running for students and faculty throughout the school year. Car access to campus is limited, and students must pay parking fees to park on campus. The Evanston campus is both urban and safe, which is one of the reasons many students are attracted to it. It has the hustle and bustle that makes it feel like a city, while being clean and safe. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Jasmine: Professors, advisers, teaching assistants, and other students are very available. Northwestern University is a great training ground for learning how to ask for help and take advantage of opportunities offered. Because it is a top research university that is consistently ranked among the best in the nation by the likes of U.S. News and World Report, it is very rigorous and requires students to mature as they navigate classroom, internship, research, and extracurricular experiences with some of the top people in various fields. Teachers post their office hours on syllabi, content management systems, and their office doors, and they get very excited when students make use of their assistance. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Jasmine: Dorm life is very exciting. There is a residential college system that allows students to choose dorms based on common interests, such as public affairs, womens issues, communications, and science. There are regular dorms for students wanting that traditional, movie-like dorm experience. Once admitted, students must fill out a survey that asks about their housing preferences. From there, the residential staff does its best to place students where they choose. All freshmen are required to live on campus. After that, students are allowed to live off-campus, which is a viable option because Evanston is the perfect college town. Dining rooms are central places for meetings, both formal and informal. They offer a variety of foods, including kosher, vegan, and cultural/celebratory options. Students buy housing plans at the start of the school year, and they are able to use points from those plans to purchase meals or to buy food from the small convenience stores located near every dining hall. Also, some dorms have small cafes. In the student center, called Norris, there are familiar restaurants like Jamba Juice, Subway, Starbucks, and Dunkin Donuts. Weekly, dining halls host firesides. At these residential events, professors, teaching assistants, and other expert guests visit students to discuss current events. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Jasmine: I was a Sociology and Legal Studies major a decision I made largely because of the relatively small sizes of both departments and the strength of the faculty members resumes. My work in both fields afforded me several phenomenal internships and scholarships. In addition to the tremendous access the majors granted me, I chose them because they were broad enough to allow me career flexibility while both being focused on civic engagement and social justice. They laid a great foundation for the Master of Social Work I am pursuing in graduate school this coming fall. Of course, Northwestern is a research university, so students interested in research gain a ton of faculty access. Also, programs involving research, like the natural and social sciences, are well funded. Northwestern has one of the best journalism program in the country, so its faculty and alum are very involved in ensuring students are prepared for and have access to the best internships and jobs. From conversations with students in other majors, what Ive described is pretty much the experience across the board. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Jasmine: Meeting people as a freshman is not difficult at all. Orientation week, peer advising groups, freshmen classes, and dorm staff are all dedicated to making the freshman transition period smooth. This means the people and programming inform you about the ins and outs of social and academic life, introduce you to all conceivable resources (from physical and mental health services to advisers, career services, and student group leaders), and remain available for any bumps along the way. I worked as a minority recruitment coordinator in the Office of Undergraduate Admission. In this role, I set up programming that connected minority students to current students, so that they would have these connections on campus months before arriving and could sustain them throughout their college experiences. Greek life is very visible on campus. Panhellenic, National Panhellenic, and Multicultural Councils are represented. They produce many student leaders and help support important campus initiatives. However, if a student does not choose to become Greek, he or she can still have a rich social life independent of those organizations and their programming. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Jasmine: The university-wide Career Center and career support offices within different departments are indispensible. They connect with alumni in hiring positions and establish strategic relationships with employers in the Chicagoland area, as well as national and international businesses. These connections allow them to coordinate hiring fairs and other campus recruiting events, especially for those students interested in banking and consulting. Individual departments tend to have their own career fairs or featured company meet-and-greets, which allow students to present resumes, hear from the hiring teams for top businesses, and network with other undergraduate, graduate, and faculty attendees. Many of these events are catered, which is important if you are a busy college kid not wanting to cook or buy your dinner. Also, alumni services and email listservs for different majors will post job opportunities almost daily. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Jasmine: All available study spaces are well decorated, spacious, easily accessible (and capable of being booked for meetings and programming), and close to at least one of the many dining options on campus. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Jasmine: Evanston is located just north of Chicago, so anything you could ask of a major city is at most a 30-minute train ride away. Also, Evanston is renowned for its diverse and delicious selection of restaurants. Shopping is a featured part of the Evanston experience, as Urban Outfitters, American Apparel, Gap, The North Face, and many other retailers call it home. Evanston has countless small restaurants that appeal to niche audiences. As I mentioned before, Evanston is the perfect college town with its food options, shopping, movie theatre, hotels (which are frequently booked for large campus events), and convenient housing for off-campus students. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Jasmine: Generally, the undergraduate student body hovers around 8,000, spread pretty evenly across all four classes. The class sizes were suited perfectly to the types of classes I took. Also, in time, you learn that you want a nice mix of small and large classes because of the different energies the professors bring and because some subjects are better suited to lecture than discussion. Practically every large class (meaning about 25 or more) had mandatory discussion sections, which are separate class meetings of between 10 and 15 students that meet to dig deeper into class material. They serve as great spaces to prepare for tests and to gain participation points for your final grade. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Jasmine: My greatest experience was a civic engagement course that was tied to an internship. The field studies class was quite innovative, in that the professor sat with us in a discussion circle as she moderated intensely engaging conversations about social injustice, community organizing, and personal responsibility. We read phenomenal, groundbreaking literature that solidified my interest in social engagement as a career. From our independent readings, students were able to lead classes as well, making it clear to me how much a successful classroom allows everyone to be students and teachers at different times. Finally, the connection between what was taught and what was needed for the internships was clear. Sometimes, what is learned in class can feel remote from what is needed for a successful career. The version on learning Mandarin Chinese by Wendy Abraham is worth picking up and is available on Amazon for less than £20 (and for only a couple of quid if you’re happy to buy a used copy!). Aimed at absolute beginners, the book can teach you how to have everyday conversations, get to grips with the tones used in Chinese, and get around in China.Putting together words in Chinese will take you longer than it did in English. Modern Mandarin Chinese Grammar (Modern Grammars)This book  written by Claudia Ross and published by Routledge might end up being your Chinese grammar bible. It’s an invaluable resource that covers every single aspect and element of Chinese grammar as well as the inevitable exceptions to the rules that can sometimes have you tearing your hair out.  This book is better than your average grammar textbook and at around £20 new, you can’t afford not to pick up a copy to add to your Chinese library.This book is one of the better resources for students who’ve just started learning Chinese. It focuses on using Chinese rather than studying it academically and will get you conversing in Chinese more quickly than so me of the other textbooks in this list.At under £20, it’s also cheaper than some of the textbooks in this list. If your goal is to get some Chinese under your belt before travelling to a Chinese-speaking country, this is probably the book you want on your shelf.There are also several other books in the series so once you’ve finished with this one, you can move onto the next and keep improving your Chinese. However, the later books are very advanced and may be indecipherable without the assistance of a private tutor to help explain them.You may also find help with these recommended apps... Easy Peasy Chinese: Mandarin Chinese for BeginnersThis is one of the best sellers on Amazon  and a highly-recommended resource for beginners. Costing around £5, this is also one of the cheapest books on the list (which might explain why it sells so well) and to get the most out of the series, you’re probably going to have to invest in the workbook, too.  That said, the workbook is also very cheap and you can easily get both books for under £20.If you’re travelling to China for a business trip or just on holiday, you should think about getting both of these books and working towards speaking conversational Chinese before you get there.  Make sure you use the CD as well so that you can hear the Chinese pronunciation which is a hugely important aspect to speaking Chinese well. Pocket Oxford Chinese Dictionary (Oxford Dictionaries)It goes without saying that if you’re learning Chinese, you should probably invest in a dictionary. However, if you’ve just started, don’t waste your money on one of those huge dictionaries as it’s very unlikely you’ll come across half of the words in them as a beginner.Instead, opt for a smaller dictionary like the Pocket Oxford Chinese Dictionary  which is both easier to carry and easier to look up words in since there’s less pages to scour through. Fu rthermore, you can always bring smaller dictionaries with you when you travel as you can never guarantee that you’ll be able to access Wifi or data when you’re travelling, after all. However, remember that the term “pocket” is used very liberally by those who make dictionaries! In my last several guest posts on the Varsity Tutors Blog, Ive covered both prominent and subtle aspects of the interview day. Check out my July entry for advice on how to let your story show your glory and how to fake it until you make it, and my August entry emphasizing that you can run; you can hide; but you cant escape the weaknesses in your application. Septembers piece reviewed geographical issues how to ensure you persuade programs that you are willing to relocate to a substantially different location (you can check out anytime; but you can never leave) and solid strategies for demonstrating interest in schools thats amore. Finally, Octobers entry included advice on how to tactfully navigate interview day social events shiny happy people holding hands and how to manage illegal questions with poise youve got to hide your love away. As weve seen through those entries, the medical school interview day itself is complicated and imposing, and managing it graciously is critical. But many applicants give short shrift to creating a solid post-game strategy, work thats also essential to avoid missteps. In todays entry, well cover those often-overlooked points. Unforgettable After the interview day ends, you should take a moment to put your feet up and congratulate yourself for getting through the inconvenient travel, small talk with strangers, and ability to appear fresh and pleasant when youre really quite exhausted. Then, after youve taken a few deep breaths, you should take out your pen and paper and get started on your thank you notes. Two years ago, a medical school applicant wrote me to say that the Dean of the school at which she had recently interviewed called her to tell her that he was impressed with her candidacy and the hand-written thank you note she had sent. The client thanked me for my help with her application and for the thank you note tip. (As you might have guessed, she was admitted to that med school.) Writing a thank you note after a medical school interview is low-hanging fruit: Its an easy-to-perform courtesy with high impact for minimal effort that is frequently overlooked by otherwise competitive applicants. Its worth the few dollars at your local superstore and the three minutes apiece. But what should the letter contain, to whom should it be sent, and is email or snail mail the best method for delivery? First, the letter should be brief and clear. Thank the faculty member for the invitation to interview and ensure you point out that you would make a great contribution to the school if accepted. If you discussed a particular topic with the faculty member that would be appropriate for the note, you can include it. A brief but thoughtful thank you note can be only a few lines long and still make a positive impression. The flip side is that a flowery or inappropriately casual letter can leave the impression that you have the insincerity of a beauty pageant contestant or that you are overconfident mistaken perceptions that the recipient may rely on when she nixes your candidacy at the admissions committee meeting. Second, I recommend writing more letters rather than fewer, meaning that if you think you should write a letter, do it. Heres a tip: If you spent more than five minutes with someone one-on-one, consider writing him/her a thank you note. (Also write notes to those faculty members who participated in any group interview you had.) A brief and considered thank you note won't hurt and might help, so be generous with them. Finally, send your thank you notes through snail mail. (If you also want to email a note, that is fine as a supplement, but it should not replace a hand-written note.) The reasons are several-fold: First, email may be viewed as lazy. Hand-written thank you notes take more time, which shows. Second, its easy to delete, archive, or ignore an email. Also, to put an email thank you note in a hard file, the receiver needs to take the time to print out your email. You dont want any barriers between you and your good impression. I do recommend getting those handwritten thank you notes in quickly. The night after youve completed your interview or the next day is a good time to write and send. In addition to thank you notes, another tactic is writing a letter of intent. These optional updates to schools can confirm your interest, while showcasing old and new aspects of your candidacy. Programs often seek not just top recruits, but recruits who are genuinely grateful to be at their specific institutions, and sending a supplemental letter demonstrates that sentiment. If you plan to write a letter of interest, though, ensure you affirm your strong interest in the institution while keeping your writing brief. (I strongly advise one page maximum.) Also, make sure you distinguish yourself with your accomplishments: In editing letters of intent, I note that applicants often make the mistake of focusing on their desired institution's virtues. These programs already know their strengths; unfortunately, you won't further your candidacy by reiterating them. In my next blog, well discuss how to manage some sticky interview situations. This moderate-tempo art song is marvelous for showing off French diction, overall vocal range, and musicality. “Come Ready and See Me” This lovely American art song by Richard Hundley is a favorite for many reasons. It has a lovely, memorable melody! Remember that it’s important to show how well you enunciate in your native language (a huge thing with choral directors), so if you perform this well and really use the dynamics, you’ll impress! Auditioning With Other Songs If the chorus youre auditioning for allows a variety of audition songs, here are some helpful lists to find great choir audition songs based on your voice type: 6 Showstopping Audition Songs Perfect for Tenors 8 Dazzling Audition Songs for Alto Voices 2) Brush Up On Your Sight Reading Skills This is one of the most important choral audition tips, since sight singing is often part of the audition process. There are tons of resources out there that can help books such as the Danhauser series by   G. Schirmer or the Jenson Sight Singing Course, and very useful websites such as The Practice Room   but make sure youre also working with your singing teacher within your lessons to improve your skills. If youre nervous, dont fret: it’s unlikely the audition panel/choral director will have you read anything in a crazy key or time signature! They are looking for basic musicianship. Remember to practice slow and steady, and to take deep breaths. Treat it the same way you treat your songs when you practice. The same advice certainly applies for when you sight read on your audition day! 3) Practice Your Intervals Singing intervals is an essential skill for all singers, and will come in handy when you’re sight reading your part in choral rehearsals! Funky n Fun Series 3: “Challenging Patterns” by Kim Chandler is incredible for helping singers identify all sorts of intervals, scales, triads, and so on. Once you’ve got them in your ear, it will make the tonal memory and sight reading portions of your audition much easier for you. Plan to spend a good amount of time on these exercises in both your vocal lessons and practice leading up to your choir audition. 4) Watch Videos of Dynamic Choral Directors Eric Whitacre is one the hottest to follow right now. (He has even given a TED Talk!)  Watch how closely his singers follow his every move. His passion for each piece that he conducts really shows on his face and translates over to the rest of his choir. The best conductors are able to do this!   It’s important that choral singers look completely  engaged as they perform, just as if they were soloists. Your voice teacher is also bound to have plenty of other choir audition tips and sound advice on how to prepare! Note that many choral works require straight tone, so if you have a bigger voice and have been training as a soloist, you’ll definitely want to ask your voice teacher for help with this.
